Cover Boy

1190921274Those are the eyes of Jonathan Papelbon gracing the cover of this week’s Sports Illustrated, and who wouldn’t be at least a little intimidated by having to hit against that? Tom Verducci, who is the best baseball writer working in traditional print media by far, has the story of our uber-closer reclaiming his role, and it goes without saying that it’s a must-read. Spanning the Web

Taking you around the internet for your afternoon enjoyment.1190920522

Tourist hell:  We don’t wish tourists any harm, and we certainly love their discretionary income being spent in our lovely shops.  But the idea of flames shooting out of manhole covers in the North End, sending them screaming away from their cannoli and clearing the narrow sidewalks for once makes us kind of happy.  [Globe]

New Spot For Financial District Opens

Posted by Paul Flannery on 9/27/2007 at 2:37PM | No Comments

No, it’s not the newest stop on the Green Line. Kingston Station, which officially opened on September 17, is the latest addition to the Financial District restaurant scene. Housed in the space that used to be Peking Tom’s, the restaurant offers crowd-pleasing American bistro food like braised mahi with roasted tomato and crispy risotto ($23), steak frites ($26), and the hearty Station Burger, which could almost qualify as breakfast, with a sunnyside up egg, applewood smoked bacon, and Gruyere cheese ($13). The News Station?

Posted by Amy Derjue on 9/27/2007 at 2:26PM | No Comments

1190906626Last night, Channel 7 had a segment with Tewksbury native Steve Santagati, author of The Manual: A True Bad Boy Explains How Men Think, Date, and Mate–and What Women Can Do to Come Out on Top. The conceit is that Santagati will save two local women from spinsterhood by tarting them up and teaching them how to talk to men.

Questions For. . . Heather Graham

Posted by Amy Derjue on 9/27/2007 at 1:18PM | No Comments

1190913123It’s almost October, which means the supernatural festivities in Salem are getting even more paranormal than usual. The witch city gets an early start tonight with a seance in honor of New York Times bestselling author Heather Graham, whose new book is titled, (what else?) The Seance. It’s about a reluctant medium in Florida who must solve a string of murders by talking to the spirit of the dead lead detective. We talked to Heather about what she expects will happen at the seance tonight and why people are drawn to the occult.

Townie Town Hall

Not every item of note can make it into Boston’s big dailies. We scoured the local papers to keep you up-to-date.

1190902361Squawking of the human and avian variety: A Cantabrigian has taken his fight over his neighbor’s loud parrot to the Cambridge Licensing Commission, telling them that the bird ruined his summer with his squawking that sounds like, “a truck backing up, a broken smoke alarm or a high-pitched ‘koo-kee.” That actually sounds like our apartment building. Just Like at the Movies, Silence is Golden

Posted by John Gonzalez on 9/27/2007 at 10:45AM | No Comments

Poor Howie Carr. It’s been rough for him lately. He’s getting beaten up for his less-than-no-effort columns while simultaneously being pummeled by the court.

For those who haven’t been paying attention, a Suffolk Superior Court judge’s ruling has prevented Carr from making the leap from WRKO to WTKK (where, reportedly, a $7 million contract awaits). Obviously, this isn’t sitting well with Carr.

According to the Herald, he’s now asking the judge to “reconsider” the ruling. I didn’t know you could do that. You think Carr said, “pretty please?”

And Now For the Traffic, Jason Feifer

Posted by Paul Flannery on 9/27/2007 at 9:59AM | No Comments

1190901009We love Jason Feifer at Boston Daily. He is the only one on our staff who can rock a Bentley one day, and then be upset by the presence of a woman in a bathtub of rose petals the next. Don’t even get us started on the men’s leggings.

We had no idea he did traffic reports, as well. Continue reading “And Now For the Traffic, Jason Feifer” »
