Kevin Youkilis a Hit For Kids
An exhausted Kevin Youkilis celebrated the one-year anniversary of his charity, Hits for Kids, at Avila last night. Rocking a white paisley shirt (we wonder if he and Jason Varitek planned to wear paisley or if it was just a happy coincidence), he chatted with the press as fiancee Enza Sambataro flitted from room to room, greeting friends and helping to keep the event running smoothly.
In its first year, the charity has raised over $800,000 for community-based children’s charities and medical research organizations around New England, and the Red Sox third baseman told us he hoped at the end of last night’s live and silent auctions, the total would be close to $1 million.
But how much of that sum came from the numerous food items Youkilis has put his name on?
“I would say a very small amount has come from the candy bars, and the number for the SlumpBuster hasn’t come in yet,” Youk says.
His enthusiasm for the energy drink is clear. “It’s a must-taste,” Youk says. “I was very surprised the first time I drank it. I thought it was going to be really iffy, but all the guys love it.”
Since the team returned from Florida in the wee hours of the morning, had he had one to get through the event? “Not today,” Youk says. “But if I find one here, I’m having it.”
Youk says he’s looking forward to spending time with his family during the offseason (especially watching Scooby-Doo and helping his girlfriend’s son build with Legos). As for the 2008 season ending without a trip to the World Series, Youkilis is OK with it.
“I’m extremely spoiled to be where I am on a daily basis. To be one game away from the World Series after winning the World Series is very humbling,” he says. “It was a great season, just not the best season.”
