In the June 2008 issue of Boston magazine, we told you about Bart Steele, the Chelsea musician who believes Jersey rockers Bon Jovi stole his song “Man, I Really Love This Team” and released it as “I Love This Town,” which was used in TV spots for baseball’s playoffs.

Today’s Herald reports that Steele is suing Bon Jovi for $400 billion. Yes, that’s billion. With a “B.” Surely that must a typo.

“Actually, they owe me more than that,” Steele tells Boston Daily.

Perhaps our plan to hustle and gamble our way through the economic crisis isn’t the best one. Instead of putting our capital toward scratch tickets or trying to hustle with the pool sharks, maybe we should invest our time in hanging out with House Speaker Sal DiMasi.

It seems everyone he’s good friends with come into a lot of money.

Mike Ross for (City Council) President

1219415931When our MySpace friend and honorary Boston Daily blogger Mike Ross didn’t return our phone call this morning, we instantly assumed the future City Council President was now too cool for us. So we tried him again, fully prepared to describe the hurt we felt inside.

“Sorry I didn’t get back to you earlier,” Ross said when he picked up the phone. “I’ve been kind of busy with Yom Kippur.”

God, we can be such jerks sometimes. But Ross took some time to talk about his possible promotion to head of the City Council.

Northeastern’s New Logo

1223578118Poor Northeastern. Its neighbors reacted to plans to build new dorms with the same degree of terror South Enders greeted the BU Biolab, and Boston police spent last weekend breaking up student parties.

But administrators have a plan to literally changing Northeastern’s image. Yes, it’s time for more university logo changes!

Fuzzy Math from the Committee for Small Government

1220556118Perhaps it makes us lazy citizens, but when we received the Information for Voters guide from Secretary of State Bill Galvin, we tossed it directly into the recycling bin. With headline-friendly ballot questions like eliminating the income tax, repealing criminal penalties for carrying small amounts of pot, and banning greyhound racing, we already feel pretty informed.

Luckily for us, a Boston Daily tipster did read through the guide, and alerted us to an interesting statistic in Committee for Small Government chairperson Carla Howell’s argument in favor of Question 1.

“41% waste in Massachusetts state government,” reveals survey.

Wow. Sailors don’t waste that much of their paycheck on booze. Why hadn’t we heard this damning percentage before?

Perhaps because it’s more “truthy” than true.

Red Sox Role Reversal

Posted by Amy Derjue on 10/9/2008 at 12:04PM | No Comments

1220451928Congratulations, Red Sox fans. You are now the Evil Empire.

As Steve Buckley points out in today’s Herald, the Tampa Bay Rays are now playing the role of scrappy underdogs, much like the 2004 Red Sox. And your Boston Red Sox will take the part of the Yankees in the 2008 ALCS. A St. Petersburg Times columnist has already dubbed our boys the “final-reel villains.”

Stop clutching your pearls, Sox fans. We’ve been waiting years for this.

Are Female Voters Swayed by Their Daddy Issues?

Posted by Amy Derjue on 10/9/2008 at 11:12AM | No Comments

1221069098John McCain is trying to woo me because I’m a white female voter. Many of my fellow Caucasian women have decided to support Barack Obama now that the economy is in a tailspin, so McCain is now talking about healthcare and homeownership in hopes of bringing us over to his side.

OK, that’s what candidates do, but what got my XX chromosomes in a bunch was this passage in the Globe (emphasis added, naturally).

[In 2004], pollsters conjured the profile of “security moms,” married women with children who made national-security issues a priority after the Sept. 11 attacks.

After this September’s financial crisis, some political analysts expect that a similar instinct – seeking a trusted paternal figure in a time of uncertainty – will apply to domestic concerns.

Here’s a thought: Women will vote on the issues. And we don’t mean their daddy issues.
