Because we don’t already have enough going on, this weekend Boston magazine, in collaboration with Boston.TV, rolls out the first of our monthly television series: The Best of Boston magazine. Airing tomorrow night at 11:35 p.m. and again Sunday night at 11:45 p.m. (what? you have someplace else to be?) on WCVB Channel 5.

The debut show will feature behind-the-scenes highlights from our March issue. There’s exclusive interviews with Bringing Down the House author, and John Gonzalez profile subject, Ben Mezrich (”Ben Mezrich: Based on a True Story“); on-set footage from our Spring Fashion shoot with local hard rock phenom Bang Camaro (”Bing Bang Theory”); scenes from the Fenway Park Bar in Kyoto, Japan (”Land of the Rising Sox”), and more. In what has become a highlight of each season, Tim Gunn began the show by visiting the remaining four designers as they prepared their collections for New York Fashion Week. Unfortunately this episode did not provide the geographic exploration as seen in previous seasons (Uli in Miami! Jay in Pennsylvania!), as all but Rami had been living and working in New York City. The New York-centricity of the episode was driven home when Jillian invited Tim to visit her family—all the way on Long Island. Jillian’s mother once visited a clairvoyant, she said, who told her that one of her children was to be famous. We wished we’d met the psychic, too. (more…)

Though party throwers have as of late gone with Tuesday as their weeknight of choice, this week, Wednesday was the big night for hitting the town.

First, we found ourselves at Bar 10, at the Copley Westin, to celebrate the release of Boston’s March issue. A particularly lively and thirsty crowd reflected the issue’s subject matter. Members of 20-guy punk band Bang Camaro—and our spring fashion models—sipped girly cocktails with manly swagger.

Nearby, Tonya Mezrich, wife of author Ben Mezrich, who receives a buzzy profile in the new issue, got Bostonista pumped up for the Monday screening of 21, the movie adaptation of Mezrich’s book Bringing Down the House (starring Kate Bosworth), and the much-hyped A-list party that will follow. Bostonista admired her wardrobe options for the event, all by local designer Michael DePaulo. (Check back Tuesday for a report on those festivities.) (more…)

As friends and coworkers can attest, Bostonista is a sucker for shiny things, with the exception of reflective foreheads. So we were jazzed by the idea of Cosme Proud’s new Gold Revitalizer mask, which uses real gold flakes to exfoliate and is sold exclusively at the South End’s Nami Spa.

Billed as the newest development in Japanese skin care, the Gold Revitalizer sends negative ions to exfoliate and moisturize skin’s deepest layers. Though its name suggests the formula would lend a bronze tint, it aims to do quite the opposite: Lumiskin, a skin-whitening ingredient included in the cream, enhances the moonlight-esque glow of fair complexions. For Bostonista, who’s been slaving away with faux tanners for years, the notion that Casper-like skin could be en vogue enough to warrant enhancement is hugely exciting news. When it comes to eyebrows, I haven’t always had good luck. There were those grueling preteen years of bushy, overbearing brows, followed by botched wax jobs from classy joints with nail service in the front and a hospital gurney “waxing area” in the back. Left with little to work with, I have spent the past few years “following the path” that others had so carelessly created for me. Then I met G Spa’s Eun Joo Tracy. (more…)

At this very moment, all of Hollywood is experiencing a hangover from last night’s Botox and boob-tape filled festivities. In case you missed it (and you didn’t miss much, trust us) the Academy Awards were held yesterday, and actresses of every caliber were dressed impeccably. In other words, no fun for Bostonista.

This year, the buzz word of the night was red, with everyone from Katherine Heigl to Anne Hathaway dressed in shades of crimson, scarlet, and vermilion. Is it wrong that Bostonista thought Miley Cyrus was one of the best-dressed of the night, decked out in a goddess-y red Valentino? When even 15-year-olds look sophisticated, we know that our worst-dressed list is going to be scant. (more…)

Bostonista braved the snow and cold early this morning to witness the madness at Filene’s Basement Running of the Brides at the Hynes Convention Center. As expected, hundreds of brides and their posses of ‘maids showed up, with t-shirts and team phrases ranging from the encouraging (”We won’t rest till we find Drouin’s dress”) to the downright vicious (”Knock ‘em over, Plow ‘em down, We’re here to find Jules a wedding gown”).

While some early birds made empty promises under a thinly-veiled guise of camaraderie, “We made a pact with the team behind us to keep each others sizes,” says Crystal, 26, of Cambridge, while one honest mother of the groom acknowledged, “Things have been friendly so far because the doors haven’t opened yet.”

Bostonista found that competition was most intense among the middle-of-the-line bridezillas and their crews, who engaged in shameless bad-mouthing, staredowns, and open threats.  “Someone in the bathroom said, ‘I don’t care what happens, I’m pushing all of these b*s out of the way.’ I’m definitely watching out for her,” says Erin, 24, of Boston. Filene’s Basement’s Running of the Brides begins Friday, Feb. 20 at 8 a.m. at Hynes Convention Center, and continues until 8 p.m. It’s a new location, but the concept hasn’t changed, and with a bit more room to roam, the ladies aren’t as feisty as they used to be. We rounded up some tips from the bound and determined brides who managed to score the dream dress.
