BOSTONISTA LOVES: CHARITABLE BLING

Posted by Rachel Baker on 8/13/2008 at 11:25AM | No Comments

1218642370Ever since monsoon season descended upon our once-sunny stomping grounds, Bostonista’s been feeling a bit tropical. And what better way to treat this than with vibrant greens, bonita browns, and glowing golds?

When we first heard about Crafting Change we were intrigued, and not just because the accessories sold on the site are hand crafted by Brazilian artisans and flown stateside in a 25-year-old’s carry on, but because they’re inexpensive (and not just by our, uh, lenient standards).

B.U. grad Emily Varga, of Allston, officially launched the Web-based nonprofit in February of this year. After spending months in and around Rio on urban planning expeditions, Varga was introduced to several artists working for local artisan cooperatives. DAVID BECKHAM LOVES: BOSTONISTA!

Posted by Alyssa Giacobbe on 8/11/2008 at 11:58AM | No Comments

1218549589Here at Bostonista we’re not above namedropping. Who has time for modesty? Which is why we’ll quickly and easily take credit for a recent accessory adopted by everyone’s favorite soccer god, David Beckham. On the cover of the latest issue of Men’s Health, Mr. Posh wears the Platinum quad-link ring designed by Hoorsenbuhs (look closer, it’s there), an L.A.-based jewelry line co-owned by Boston attorney Todd Boudreau, which we introduced to you back in April.

Did Beckham pick up style tips from Boston magazine? Maybe; maybe not. We’ll go with the maybe. Continue reading “David Beckham Loves: Bostonista!” »

IN THE OLD NAVY

Posted by Rachel Baker on 8/6/2008 at 11:17AM | No Comments

1218037059Snobby isn’t exactly the right word for our approach to shopping. Particular is more like it. While we love a good pair of Prada pumps, we also appreciate the affordable good design happening over at Target. But there are some brands that just aren’t us.

We thought Old Navy was one of those chains. Until a few weeks ago, when an errand spree in South Bay Plaza changed our mind.

We first wandered into the cavernous store in search of a Peter Pan-collared blouse for an upcoming Fashion Masochist column. We walked out with an Ella Moss-esque striped sundress, a metallic gold knit dress that could easily pass for Helmut Lang, a Missoni-inspired bandeau bikini, and three cardigans (two striped, one solid black). All for under $150. Continue reading “In the Old Navy” »

1217953060On the heels of our last airline post, we bring you more aviation news. French-based L’Avion has just been partnered by British Airways. What is L’Avion, you say? And, more importantly, why should you care?

BOSTONISTA LOVES: THE KINDLE

Posted by Alyssa Giacobbe on 8/4/2008 at 11:49AM | No Comments

1217862546I’ve lately been in the downsizing mood. Changing apartments this spring satisfied my need to purge. A family yard sale soon after cleared out the rest of the old junk, including golf shoes (a nice thought); piles of costume jewelry, beanie babies, and cat toys; and the impulse-bought super deluxe grind ‘n’ brew coffee pot used once (a bitch to clean). I consign all clothes I haven’t worn in more than a year and recently downloaded all my CDs onto a hard drive and sold them off. I’m making an effort to keep the hoarding tendencies at bay.

But I haven’t quite been able to quit books. For one, it feels wrong. Two, I like having them around. I’ll buy a book I’m interested in as soon as I hear about it so that I don’t forget, which is why I’ve got piles and piles of high-quality unread books in my bedroom, office, and otherwise scattered throughout the house, and I still have imminent plans to purchase the tell-all by Madonna’s brother.

Enter the Kindle. Continue reading “Bostonista Loves: The Kindle” »

NIGHT LINES: THE ACHILLES PROJECT PARTY

Posted by admin on 8/1/2008 at 1:15PM | No Comments

1217567654Last night, we were this close to having a one night stand. It was at the Achilles Project’s Shopping Under the Influence Party. And it wasn’t with a dude. It was with a dress.

The Fort Point Channel boutique-and-restaurant-in-one threw one impressive soiree, combining four of our favorite things: shopping, sipping, eating, and sales. Everything in the store was already slashed 50 percent (and will still be marked down all next week, and until the fall merch hits the racks). But party guests got an additional 10 percent off just for showing up last night. Add to that the complimentary cocktails from Stoli Blackberi and Bacardi, and tasty bites from Persephone‘s menu, and my how the credit cards came out to play.
