BEAUTY BATTLE: LIP STAINS

Posted by Tanya Pai on 6/27/2011 at 7:14AM | No Comments

Welcome to the first installment of Beauty Battle, where we’ll pit two similar products — one from an upscale brand, the other from a drugstore — against each other to see which one reigns supreme. This week, we’re testing two of the suddenly ubiquitous marker-style lip and cheek stains: Josie Maran’s Magic Marker and Maybelline’s Colorsational.

Josie Maran Magic Marker
Price: $19, available at Sephora

The hype: The press release promises a “perfectly portable infusion of rich, rosy color” and also contains hyaluronic acid and sugar extracts, which have exfoliating properties. This brand is big into natural ingredients, so it’s free of parabens, phthalates, pork rinds (just making sure you’re paying attention), and synthetic fragrances. BOSTON BRIDAL BLOG: TO CELEBRANT OR NOT TO CELEBRANT?

Posted by Brittany Jasnoff on 6/24/2011 at 7:51AM | 3 Comments

While working to get the Fall/Winter 2011 issue of Boston Weddings (on newsstands and online June 28!) out the door, one particular article sent my planning instincts into overdrive: Austyn Ellese Mayfield’s Q&A with Cindy Matchett, an officiant at ceremonies across New England. The interview offers up some really interesting tidbits — Matchett once married a couple in a canoe, for example — but what I was most surprised by was Matchett’s title: not a JOP or a minister, but rather a certified life-cycle celebrant, a graduate of the Celebrant Foundation and Institute.

And what, you ask, is that? Celebrants, according to the foundation’s website, “are people in your community who are trained by our institute to officiate at, compose, and perform the highest-quality personalized ceremonies for couples … .” It sounded pretty appealing to me because as an “interfaith couple” (does anyone even use that term anymore?), my fiancé and I have had trouble finding — and agreeing on — someone to marry us. A custom ceremony written by someone who would be willing to incorporate traditions and rituals from both of our cultures seemed like a much better fit than some of the oddball “alternative” clergy we’d been previously pursuing. SUN VS SKIN: SUNBURN REMEDIES

Posted by Maggie Brooks on 6/21/2011 at 7:48AM | 1 Comment

It’s that time of year when the sun beckons us outdoors for eating, relaxing, drinking, and all other basic living things. It is also the time that we have to wear specific clothing, sit funny, or sleep a certain way as to not the disturb the sunburn sprawled across our backs, shoulders, backs of knees, or anywhere else we didn’t slather sunblock. Handling a sunburn is much like dealing with a hangover: Everyone has a remedy they swear by. While we’re normally game for testing DIY beauty secrets (like foodie face masks), causing intentional damage to our skin didn’t seem like a worthwhile risk. Instead, we’ve done our research and compiled a list of our staffers’ best sunburn remedies.

Most popular is the Old Faithful of remedies, aloe straight from the plant, though the green goo in a bottle does the trick for a few staffers. Business manager Lauren Savit leaves a bottle of aloe in the fridge from June through August to ensure the ultimate cooling agent is at her fingertips at all times. Others, like senior editor Janelle Nanos, mix it up with cold showers and aloe, while Boston Weddings editor Anne Vickman also uses vitamin E oil to keep skin from blistering.

STEALS AND DEALS: FLOCK’S SPRING SIDEWALK SALE

Posted by bostonista on 6/10/2011 at 1:15PM | No Comments

What do a vintage VW bus, major discounts on designer clothing, and a summer day, all add up to? Flock’s ’60s-inspired spring sidewalk sale, of course. The bohemian-chic South End store is holding its first-ever sale of this type on Saturday, June 11, from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

To clear its shelves in preparation for the summer season, Flock is offering spring rags from designers such as Dolce Vita, Lauren Moffat, and Lime and Dot at 50 to 75 percent off. And don’t forget the accessories: Danielle Kupsc, one half of the mother-daughter team that owns the boutique, will be selling her own handmade silk headbands, along with various other baubles, out of her refurbished vintage VW bus, which will be parked on the storefront sidewalk.

Need even more motivation? Get there early and score free shopping fuel from fro-yo shop Pinkberry, which will be handing out frozen treats to the first 50 guests.

274 Shawmut Ave., Boston, 617-391-0222, flockboston.com.

BOSTON BRIDAL BLOG: JUST SAY YES!

Posted by Brittany Jasnoff on 6/9/2011 at 1:31PM | No Comments

There isn’t a bride I know who doesn’t like a bargain (especially, ahem, yours truly). And for those out there still looking for the gown of a lifetime, Bostonista has the scoop on yet another huge dress sale invading the Hub. This Saturday and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m., the Sheraton Boston plays host to Brides Against Breast Cancer, a nationwide gown tour that benefits the Oregon-based Making Memories Breast Cancer Foundation. With hundreds of pristine frocks from the likes of Pronovias, Vera Wang, and Maggie Sottero — at up to 75 percent off the retail price and in virtually all sizes — finding “the one” will be as easy as…well, is anything about planning a wedding really easy?

The best part is that the proceeds of the sale go toward making the dreams of stage IV breast cancer patients a reality — meaning that here, you can truly have your cake and eat it too. “I think the fact that brides can save a great deal on their wedding dress is a huge draw, and they are also able to help someone in need,” says public relations manager Erin Scharf. In 2010 the Boston event raised nearly $33,000 for Making Memories, and the organization is hoping for a large turnout this year, as well. “Boston has been a strong market for us. Brides in Boston, they know what they want.” Amen to that.

General admission is free, or get an early start on your dress shopping at Saturday’s $20 VIP champagne brunch, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Sheraton Boston, 39 Dalton St., Boston, 617-236-2000; bridesagainstbreastcancer.org.

CRIMES OF FASHION: DEATH TO THE PANTSUIT

Posted by Tanya Pai on 4/11/2011 at 4:06PM | 2 Comments

I’ll admit it: I have an outfit addiction. Many are the times I’ve rushed out the door, made late by my inability to leave the house feeling that not only is my ensemble coordinated, but also conveys my mood and the vibe I’m going for that day. I fully understand the difficulties of digging up a top and a bottom that match, to say nothing of accessories and shoes.

And yet.

I cannot condone the pantsuit.

I don’t mean the Hillary-Clinton-diplomatic-conference type of suit. Nor the lady-lawyer power suit. Not even, if you find yourself pulling a Lohan (excuse me – a “Lindsay”), the classic orange prison jumpsuit. No, I mean the hideous, deformed, long-pants-attached-to-a-top crack baby of a romper and Cletus the Slack-Jawed Yokel’s best overalls.

The formal variety is bad enough (Rihanna and Leighton Meester, I’m looking at you). But now it appears that some stores, such as Madewell, are condoning these monstrosities for everyday wear. I’m all for casual chic, but in what universe would a $200 denim onesie with belt loops and boob pockets, covered in “paint” splatters and faux dirt, be appropriate or ― more important ― even remotely flattering? On anyone? Who rolls out of bed and thinks, “Hmm, I’m really feeling ‘fashion-forward farmer’ today”? (And on a side note, how the hell do you go to the ladies’ room in these things?)

So the next time you come across a jumpsuit in a store and think, “This would save me a lot of time matching my clothes in the morning,” I urge you to back away immediately and remember that there’s another solution. It’s called a dress.

EDITORS’ PICKS: CRANBERRY SUGAR SCRUB

Posted by A. J. Downey on 1/19/2011 at 3:50PM | No Comments

By: A. J. Downey

Many New Year’s resolutions revolve around eating better and exercising more. If you’re one of the few who’ve made it (almost) three weeks without reverting to old habits — excellent work! Now, how about you reward yourself a little? I mean, just because you’ve dutifully succumbed yourself to 100-calorie packs and sweaty lunchtime workouts doesn’t mean that you can’t indulge at all in 2011.

This winter, The Spa at Equinox Fitness debuted a cranberry sugar rub that both exfoliates weathered skin and rejuvenates those tired muscles. The sugar granules and cranberry seeds go to work on the body’s surface, while the therapeutic oils seep deeper to moisturize and soften the skin layers beneath. Added bonus: The Equinox spa is adjacent to the locker rooms, so your treatments can be as regular as your time on the treadmill. (Spa services are open to the public.)

Leave a comment below and tell us how are you inspiring — or rewarding! — your workouts these days!

EDITORS’ PICKS: NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS

Posted by Anne Vickman on 1/5/2011 at 2:03PM | No Comments

New year, new you, right? Maybe for some of us. When the ball drops, the inevitable question is raised: What’s your New Year’s resolution? I heckled our staff until they ‘fessed up, and one thing is certain: We’re all dedicated to feeling happier and healthier, whether it’s by burning more calories or torching our clothes.
