Posted by Courtney Hollands on 10/20/2011 at 6:28PM | No Comments

Pumpkins aren’t just for carving anymore. Stop by the Boston Sports Club in Davis Square at noon next Thursday (Oct. 27) or at noon on Halloween to try a workout incorporating — you guessed it — gym-provided orange globes.

And, if you can’t make the free sessions, here are some moves that you can try at home, courtesy of BSC master trainer Fawn Heart Cronin: READ MORE

STUFF WE LOVE: THE “NEW” NEW BALANCE

Posted by A. J. Downey on 2/17/2011 at 6:21PM | No Comments

By: A. J. Downey

Can someone please explain this New England weather to me? Given that this was my first winter in Boston, I prepared myself for the worst — and, well, we did pretty much get that, didn’t we? Every which way. But then today shows up and decides to throw out some 58- and 59-degree temps for the lunchtime runners who were geared up (down?) in tank tops and shorts. What gives?

With this season’s unpredictable — and unforgiving — weather, it’s not the easiest to plan our outdoor workout outfits. Lucky for us, Boston-based New Balance debuted new waterproof/windproof products that also feature MegaHeat fabric to sustain overall warmth. Add that to safety features (i.e. front and back reflectivity for those short February days) and tech elements (i.e. iPod-friendly pockets with wire guides), and the New Balance “NBx” line is officially New-England-weather approved. See below for a slideshow of their stuff. And tell us — how do you guys prepare for runs at this time of year? Leave us a comment below!

EDITORS’ PICKS: CRANBERRY SUGAR SCRUB

Posted by A. J. Downey on 1/19/2011 at 3:50PM | No Comments

By: A. J. Downey

Many New Year’s resolutions revolve around eating better and exercising more. If you’re one of the few who’ve made it (almost) three weeks without reverting to old habits — excellent work! Now, how about you reward yourself a little? I mean, just because you’ve dutifully succumbed yourself to 100-calorie packs and sweaty lunchtime workouts doesn’t mean that you can’t indulge at all in 2011.

This winter, The Spa at Equinox Fitness debuted a cranberry sugar rub that both exfoliates weathered skin and rejuvenates those tired muscles. The sugar granules and cranberry seeds go to work on the body’s surface, while the therapeutic oils seep deeper to moisturize and soften the skin layers beneath. Added bonus: The Equinox spa is adjacent to the locker rooms, so your treatments can be as regular as your time on the treadmill. (Spa services are open to the public.)

Leave a comment below and tell us how are you inspiring — or rewarding! — your workouts these days!

STORE OPENING: RECYCLE STUDIO

Posted by Tanya Pai on 1/14/2011 at 2:13PM | No Comments

When it comes to spinning, “no pain, no gain” seems to be the operative mantra. But taking a spin class at your gym often means enduring the barks of an instructor channeling a drill-sergeant while migraine-inducing techno pounds from the speakers. Enter Recycle Studio, Boston’s first dedicated indoor cycling facility, now open in the South End. Owner Cate Dwyer offers calorie-torching spin sessions in a space that’s more yoga studio than boot camp – what Daily Candy referred to as a “holistic environment.” The studio is decorated with images of bicycles and cheery fabrics from a New York–based textile company Dwyer used to work for. Even more intriguing, all the classes are taught by candlelight. “We want you to enter this space mentally and feel the mind-body connection,” she explains. “The candlelight transports you so you have a different mentality toward workouts, where you’re able to get into it and push yourself physically.”

TOTAL RECOIL!

By: Sarah Burns

Our city’s winter weather can lead to a major case of the stir-crazies. If you’re literally ready to bounce off the walls, hit up Sky Zone Boston, the Northeast’s first indoor trampoline park.

Owner Stella Downie teamed up with the Las Vegas-based Sky Zone franchise two years ago to bring their patented court design-10,000 square feet of interconnected grid tramps-to the 20,000 square-foot Hyde Park warehouse facility. The secret to the bounce, says Downie, who also opened Stellabella Toys in Cambridge, is the system of cables and chains that support the walled trampoline bed. The trampolines are built without traditional steel bars (which have less give and can pose a safety hazard) to allow for higher jumps.

As the leaves fall and temperature drops, runners are gearing up to face yet another Boston winter. This season, there’s more to being warm than the usual three-layer base-thermal-shell approach. Here are the hottest trends to keep you running faster and longer during the season’s coldest months.

As soon as we get comfortable with one workout trend, something comes around to make it more complicated. Take your Downward Facing Dog, just add water and voila! You get Adventure Chatham’s new yoga-on-paddleboards class.

Those of you who are tired of solid ground will love this class. Who needs a mat when you’ve got a paddleboard floating down the waterways of the Cape?

An extension of the things we’re obsessed with this month:

Ballet-inspired classes: Like the rest of the celeb-following world, we’ve been intrigued by trainer-to-the-stars Tracey Anderson‘s dance/Pilates hybrid workouts ever since client Gwyneth started showing off her legs on red carpets everywhere. As we wait for Anderson to open a Boston studio, we’ve signed up to try Life in Synergy’s Ballet Booty and Boston Sports Club’s NYC Ballet Workout Movement. We’ll keep you posted…

MINI-MASOCHIST: THE $249 SLED

Posted by admin on 1/21/2009 at 10:00AM | No Comments

With all this snow, how are we supposed to maintain our girlish figure on weekends when the gym is 42 miles away and the sidewalks are buried under a foot of snow? We could have sat on the couch all day doing biceps curls with our fork, but thanks to a B-mag assignment, we layered up, headed outdoors, and went sledding.

We were working on a story to find the best sled money can buy. The near blizzard conditions were perfect for testing out the the $249 Airboard. It’s basically an inflatable sled (not unlike an air mattress), shaped like an arrowhead, which allows you to steer and carve turns on a slope by shifting your body weight from left to right. Just the shape and the softness of it made us want to curl up on it and snooze, but we had a job to do (poor us). READ MORE

BOSTONISTA SWEATS IT

Posted by Alyssa Giacobbe on 10/27/2008 at 10:53AM | No Comments

1225121217EquiFit owner Alexandra Cherubini has fused two of her passions—riding and yoga—with the AgSilver CleanMat, a yoga mat that incorporates AgSilver, a powerful antimicrobial ingredient used on horses (yes, horses) to rid them of infection and rash.

Woven throughout the entire mat, and not just on the surface, the CleanMat is guaranteed to withstand even the most rigorous power yoga-going routine, and prevent the growth of bacteria from your sweat or any one else’s. Unsavory image, sure, but that’s the facts. Hot rooms breed bacteria. This way, you don’t have to take it home with you. READ MORE
