OH, THE OCEANAIRE

Posted by Donna Garlough on 1/31/2008 at 11:41AM | No Comments

1201795960As a denizen of what many folks consider one of the better food cities in America—no thanks to Anthony Bourdain, mind you—I like to think Bostonians have pretty diverse palates. From Persian to Polish, the world’s top cuisines are all represented here. But when outsiders think of Boston, they inevitably think of seafood.

And the city meets those expectations with an ample, if sometimes repetitive, supply (see also: Sushi, Brasseries, Steakhouses). From refined (Turner Fisheries, Atlantic Fish, B&G) to rowdy (Summer Shack, East Coast Grill, Barking Crab), there’s always fresh fish to be had.

Perhaps that puts us at risk of having too much of a good thing. And yet, the grand opening of the Oceanaire Seafood Room‘s new Boston location last Wednesday night had a gravitational pull too powerful to resist. As I emerged the depths from the Government Center T station, I was mesmerized by the blue-lit awning on Court Street, lured from the streets by the siren call of seafood.

MO’ BURRITO

Posted by Amy Traverso on 1/30/2008 at 3:49PM | 2 Comments

The local burrito craze hits a new high today as Chipotle opens a new location in Cleveland Circle. For those Brookliners devoted to local favorite Ana’s Tacqueria, I say have no fear: Chipotle’s impeccably fresh menu offers a completely different aesthetic, with an emphasis on eco-friendly practices (they serve only sustainably-raised meat and the sour cream is made from hormone-free milk).

1201726767Since it is opening day, Chipotle is offering free burritos until 8 p.m. Expect a wait, though. According to Andrew Trinchitulla who answered the phone in a near scream and was still barely audible over the throngs of shouting customers, the line can be summed up in one word: large. READ MORE

CHOWDER TALKS CHOWDER

Posted by Amy Derjue on 1/30/2008 at 11:34AM | 1 Comment

1201709562We can’t wait for the Super Bowl. Our (undefeated!) team is representing the AFC, which makes the food we associate with that Sunday in February even more delicious. While we’re busy cooking up some chili and shredding some cheddar for our nachos, Boston Mayor Tom Menino and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg have engaged in a little friendly food bet.

Not only is it Patriots vs. Giants, Boston vs. New York, it’s Manhattan Clam Chowder vs. New England Clam Chowder.

CHOWDER UNDERGOES A METAMORPHOSIS

Posted by Amy Derjue on 1/29/2008 at 11:53AM | No Comments

We here at Chowder are big fans of Eastern Standard. Back in December, Matthew Reed Baker and the Boston magazine fact checkers enjoyed a great meal at the Kenmore Square bistro. Last week, a friend took me to the bar to try her new favorite cocktail, the Metamorphosis.

MERCURY RISING? NOT QUITE

Posted by Brittany Jasnoff on 1/25/2008 at 1:53PM | No Comments

In addition to the influx of upscale joints plating up astronomically priced maki and nigiri in neighborhoods already drowning in the stuff, yet another alarming trend in the raw fish industry has emerged this week, this one outside our city boundaries. On Wednesday, the New York Times released the results of independent research on mercury levels in raw tuna (mostly of the bluefin variety) served in Manhattan sushi establishments, and needless to say, the results are disturbing:

“Recent laboratory tests found so much mercury in tuna sushi from 20 Manhattan stores and restaurants that at most of them, a regular diet of six pieces a week would exceed the levels considered acceptable by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Sushi from 5 of the 20 places had mercury levels so high that the Food and Drug Administration could take legal action to remove the fish from the market.”

So does this mean Bostonians should drop the chopsticks and head for the nearest Applebee’s? Not quite yet. READ MORE

TOSCANINI’S LIVES TO SCOOP ANOTHER DAY

Posted by Amy Derjue on 1/25/2008 at 11:45AM | No Comments

1200607814Ice cream fans are one step closer to rejoicing. Toscanini’s is getting closer to reopening. After launching a blog to solicit donations for its $167,000 tax bill, the owners report that they’ve received enough money to make a down payment to the Massachusetts Department of Revenue and will hopefully start scooping soon.

But the owners are still accepting donations if you want to help them out.

DISPATCHES FROM THE BACK BURNER

Posted by Jenn Johnson on 1/24/2008 at 11:33AM | 1 Comment

1201191987Despite the city’s impressive run of restaurant debuts in past months (Mooo, Myers + Chang, T.W. Food, et al.), delays in some high-profile openings have foodies banging their silverware impatiently. Feeling a sympathy pang, we went looking for the scoop.

Originally slated for December, South End hot-spot-in-waiting Banq will bow in the next few weeks. Word is they’re taking time to get the design elements exactly right—no wonder, as wickedly hip Office dA (Mantra, Bin 26) is overseeing the aesthetics. (One rumored highlight: a men’s bathroom that features prerecorded “eavesdropped” chitchat from the ladies’ room, and vice versa.) READ MORE

GHOSTS OF RESTAURANTS PAST

Posted by Donna Garlough on 1/23/2008 at 11:49AM | No Comments

1201107539A wise friend once said: Once you start to give directions based on what used to be there—e.g., “That bar near that falafel place that burned down”—you really are a local.

I think I’ve reached that point. Every time I check out a new restaurant or bar, I can’t help but think about what it was before it became a swanky new brasserie or Barbara Lynch conquest.

CHOWDER LOVES TRADER JOE’S TURKEY CHILI

Posted by Amy Derjue on 1/22/2008 at 10:26AM | No Comments

1201013732This week’s cold snap has us craving warm, rich foods. While there’s nothing better than spending all day tending to a simmering pot of stew or soup, sometimes we want that flavor without investing all that time. When I get a craving for chili, one of my favorites is Trader Joe’s turkey chili.

SAVE TOSCANINI’S, SAVE THE BURNT CARAMEL ICE CREAM

Posted by Amy Traverso on 1/21/2008 at 1:22PM | 1 Comment

1200607814The Toscanini’s saga continues to unfold, four days after its surprise shuttering for unpaid taxes. On Friday, owner Gus Rancantore informed us that he and sister/partner Mimi were working to set up a payment plan with the state, and hoped to reopen on Tuesday. On Saturday, the Rancantoris launched Save Tosci’s, a PayPal-enabled blog aimed at raising $25,000 for a down payment on their bill. They also sent out a public statement. READ MORE
