COMING FULL CIRCLE

Posted by Donna Garlough on 11/10/2008 at 5:02PM | No Comments

1226353000When Bob’s Southern Bistro vacated its Columbus Ave. digs in 2007, I’ll admit I mourned the loss. Sure, owner Darryl Settles went on to give us the Beehive, but, having lived around the corner from the former boite, I’d miss Bob’s casual attitude—and its fried chicken.

A year later, the spot’s been resurrected as Circle Plates and Lounge, a spot featuring “fine dining at comfort-food prices,” according to owner Malcolm Aalders. And while it lacks the come-as-you-are vibe of Bob’s, owner Aalders and GM John Williams have ushered in something else: really good food for a pretty low sum.

And with that, I’m coming around. Continue reading “Coming Full Circle” »

THE NEW YORK-BOSTON RIVALRY, AS SEEN THROUGH AN EGG SANDWICH

Posted by Jolyon Helterman on 11/6/2008 at 1:39PM | No Comments

1225993059There’s a special potluck supper in Hell reserved for food bloggers of the indulgent, navel-gazing variety. Fastidious diarists, they can be counted on to chronicle every single morsel they eat, smell, bake, nuke, ponder…regardless of the interest, even potential, of any sort of audience. These “I Ate a Cheese Sandwich Today” bloggers give food blogging a bad name. It’s almost enough to make Chowder go on a diet.

But Chowder ate an egg sandwich today, and before you click outta here, here’s why you should care: First off, it was fantastic. Continue reading “The New York-Boston Rivalry, as Seen Through an Egg Sandwich” »

JUICY FRUIT

Posted by Amy Traverso on 11/5/2008 at 5:12PM | No Comments

1225919388I attended two very different tastings this past week, each terrific in its own way, one fancy, one rustic.

Let’s start with the fancy, shall we? Like many of you, I’m feeling expansive today.

Let me start by saying that I’m no great scholar of Italian wines. I’ve spent more time exploring France and California, thanks to a stint in San Francisco. My limited exposure to southern Italian wines has yielded to many sips that were harsh, acidic, and forgettable.

All the more delight, then, to sample the wines of Sicily’s Tenuta delle Terre Nere—paired with lovely food by the young chef Justin Melnick—last Thursday at Tomasso Trattoria. Continue reading “Juicy Fruit” »

Posted by Amy Derjue on 11/4/2008 at 2:18PM | No Comments

1223045992Thanks to the infinitely patient staff at Sav-Mor Liquors, Chowder has been sampling additional pumpkin beers after the overwhelming response to our post two weeks ago. We assembled a six-pack of our confirmed favorites (Smuttynose) and some that readers suggested (Post Road).

Now that the empties are in the recycling bin, let’s discuss.

CHOWDER LOVES: DINNER THEATER. (REALLY.)

Posted by Donna Garlough on 11/3/2008 at 12:15PM | No Comments

1225730946While I’ve always considered a good meal to be a fine form of entertainment, I’ve never been a big fan of food-with-entertainment. (See: dinner cruises.) That said, last week I was pleasantly—nay, wildly—entertained by a Tuesday night show at the Beehive.

NYC’s Pinchbottom Burlesque brought a Halloween-themed act to town, and the night was a far cry from any dinner theater I’d ever seen. (OK, so my only experience to date had been a 1987 showing of Oklahoma! with a side of rubbery Chicken Cordon Bleu. But still.) Continue reading “Chowder Loves: Dinner Theater. (Really.)” »
