While some may still be mourning the loss of Davis Square stalwart Gargoyles on the Square, we have to admit we are looking forward to its successor, The Painted Burro. We spoke earlier with Posto chef/owner Joe Cassinelli, who’s behind the new restaurant, to get the lowdown on the concept. READ MORE

FOR SIPPING: WATERMELON MINT MARGARITAS

Posted by Maggie Brooks on 8/17/2011 at 10:28AM | 1 Comment

Summer is slowly slipping away, but there’s still time to celebrate the sun. What better way to do that than with a pitcher of special margaritas with a summer fruit twist? Watermelon and mint is a lively combination that helps take a party favorite to a more sophisticated level.

Instead of putting mint directly into the drink à la mojito style, I chose to flavor the simple syrup with fresh mint. This method allows the fresh watermelon to the be the star with a subtle herbal background. If you like your margaritas on the sweet side, just add more simple syrup.

Ingredients
makes 4 drinks

3 c seedless watermelon, diced into 1 in cubes
4-5 tbs lime and mint simple syrup
1/4 c triple sec
1/4 c fresh lime juice
pinch kosher salt
1/2 c silver tequila

Lime and Mint Simple Syrup
1/3 c sugar
1/3 c water
zest of half a lime
1/4 c packed mint, roughly chopped

To make the simple syrup, combine the sugar and water in a small sauce pan and stir over medium heat until the sugar is completely dissolved. Remove from the heat, stir in the lime zest and mint, cover and allow to steep until room temperature. Strain into a small bowl, pressing on the mint leaves to extract as much flavor as possible. Set aside.

CINCO DE MAYO: THE TRIED AND THE TRUE

Posted by Shannon Fischer on 5/2/2011 at 4:00PM | No Comments

By: Katherine Brooks

Oh, the magic of Cinco de Mayo. Not nearly as rowdy as St. Patty’s Day in these parts but there’s always an air of devil-may-care when it falls on a weekday. Mostly because it’s an excuse to consume countless tacos and rivers of tequila. Writer Annie B. Copps gave you a roundup of Mexican food newcomers in our May issue, but let’s not kid ourselves: On a day like Cinco, we’re falling back on the tried and true. With that in mind, we humbly present our roundup of veteran Mexican stops that long ago won our hearts:

Did you celebrate National Margarita Day yesterday? (Did you even know that such a grand holiday existed?)

In honor of this eminently celebrate-able holiday, we bring you a peek inside one of Boston’s newest and definitely most seductive of Latin lounges — Back Bay’s Lolita Cocina & Tequila Bar. Redolent of sex and intrigue, the spot is dark, decadent and all shades of red, black, and wrought iron. Try any of their seven different margarita menu options — including the Diablo (blood orange and Serrano chile) and the Broken Heart (fresh raspberries and Gran Centenario Rosangel) — or try your hand (and tolerance) with a pick from the nearly 200 different types of tequila encased in the awesomely stocked Tequila Cabinet.

REVIEW: BURRITO BOWL AT THE RATTLESNAKE

Burrito Bowl winners Alex Galimberti and Jose Duarte of Taranta

History. Sports. Seafood. There are many great things about Boston – but to some of us who have transplanted from the western half of the country, Mexican food is sadly not among them. We’re about as far away from our southern neighbor as you can get in the continental U.S., and we’ve discovered that our chances of unearthing a truly tasty fajita or chimichanga here are as good as the Bruins’ for making the playoffs, a theory supported by our outing to the Burrito Bowl at the Rattlesnake this past Saturday. FIRST BITE: DORADO

Posted by Brittany Jasnoff on 8/11/2009 at 7:53AM | 2 Comments

In the battle of the Brookline taqueria, it seems, it’s all about survival of the fittest. I remember when the little known Taqueria Mexico came to the neighborhood, holding court in a small storefront directly across from Anna’s Beacon Street location. After sampling the decidedly lackluster fare, we guessed they wouldn’t last long. Sadly, we weren’t too far off. T Rex Taqueria in Brookline Village was the latest victim; as a Washington Square-area denizen, I can’t say I’d ever gone out of my way to try it, and apparently, not many others did, either.

But the giants may have a contender in counter-service newcomer Dorado, which opened near the Harvard Street Anna’s satellite in late July.  Helmed by Café D vet Chris Organ, who brought his famed fish tacos along with him, the small, color-splashed space has style and plenty of spice. READ MORE

VIVA MEXICO, AND ZOCALO!

Posted by Donna Garlough on 9/8/2008 at 11:28AM | 1 Comment

1220887473At Chowder, our eating schedules leave us little time for serendipity. With events and openings every week, there’s not much opportunity to stumble into the city’s lesser-known gems.

Last week, though, I headed over to Brookline’s much-anticipated Roadhouse BBQ for an early look; it was supposed to be open by Wednesday. Greeted by a closed door (and a cheery sign saying they’d be open on Monday), I had to come up with Plan B.

So, I wandered into Zocalo Cocina Mexicana on Commonwealth Ave., a smallish Mexican joint with a great pedigree. (Like Zocalo in Arlington, it’s run by Ricardo Ramos, who also co-owns Ole Mexican Grill in Cambridge.) And with that move, I came one step closer to finding my holy grail: Tasty, affordable Mexican food in a slightly dressed-up but still neighborhood-y setting. READ MORE
