ANDREW ZIMMERN DISHES ON HIS NEW COLLABORATION WITH BABSON COLLEGE

The Travel Channel star will serve as an entrepreneur-in-residence for students.

While Travel Channel personality Andrew Zimmern is known for dining on roasted raccoon and insects aplenty, the Bizarre Foods hostĀ also has an agenda when it comes to raising social awareness about food. The most recent example of this is his new collaboration with Wellesley-based Babson College, a school known for its entrepreneurial prowess. Zimmern will serve as entrepreneur-in-residence and work directly with the school’sĀ Lewis Institute Social Innovation Lab plus the Lab’s ‘Food Sol,’ an ā€˜action tank’ that’s focused on food-related innovation.

To kick off the collaboration, Zimmern visited the college on Monday afternoon to give a talk in front of several hundred students and faculty. PerĀ The Herald, he used the talk as an opportunity to encourage students to interact more with faculty, and also take the time to travel.

Prior to the lecture, I chatted with Zimmern on the phone to learn about his new responsibilities as entrepreneur-in-residence at the business school, and I was encouraged to learn that he’ll be serving as more than a mere famous figurehead. READ MORE

WHAT’S BREWING: PRETTY THINGS LAUNCHES ST. WINIFREDE

Learn more about the roasty brown lager, and find out where to try it tonight.

Somerville’s omnipresent gypsy brewers Pretty Things are adding a new beer to their roster today: St. Winifrede. The roasty brown lager (which owners Dann and Martha Paquette suspect is the only brown lager on the market) was named after a Welsh lass whose spurned suitor chopped her head off back in the 7th century. Legend has it that after Winifrede’s uncle managed to put her dome piece back onto her body, she came back to life. Huzzah! READ MORE

PATRICIA YEO GIVES US A SNEAK PREVIEW OF MOKSA, OPENING NEXT MONTH

Get a look at the still-under-construction space.

The blueprint for Moksa, slated to open mid-next month.Ā All photos by Leah Mennies.

Earlier this month, I showed you a preview of Patricia Yeo’s menu for Moksa, her highly anticipated izakaya in Central Square. Though the concept was originally slated to open in December, it’s now been pushed back to the middle of next month.

“This has been the longest gestation ever,” Yeo told me yesterday,Ā when I visited her in the still-rough space for a preview of the massive 8,500 square ft (!!) space. So while you may not be able to sample Yeo’s small plates and skewers for a few more weeks, you can learn about Moksa’s separate night club, “restaurant within theĀ restaurant,” and bristled walls ahead. In November, I told you about Guchi’s Midnight Ramen, a collaboration between O Ya chefsĀ Yukihiro Kawaguchi and Mark O’Leary (with help from O Ya alum Tracy Chang). Ā Last night marked the hotly anticipated debut ramen dinner, an invite-only tasting with industry folk including Colin Lynch of Menton, Jamie Bissonnette of Toro and Coppa, and John Gertsen of Drink, which took place at 12:30 am at Bondir in Cambridge.

I was lucky enough to snag an invite as well, and in the name of research I braved the cold and ate what may have been the latest three-course meal I have ever consumed. (I didn’t get home until 3 a.m.) I have to admit, Ā it was definitely worth it. Ahead, a look at what’s in store for those lucky enough to hit up a future Guchi’s ramen pop-up. READ MORE

Until recently, if you wanted to take home some of the expansive variety of produce from Siena Farms—a Sudbury farm run by Chris Kurth, husband of Oleana and Sofra toque Ana Sortun— you had to track it down at your local farmers market.

As of last Thursday, however, you can now find everything from pale white heirloom carrots to fresh eggs to dense coconut macaroons (from Sofra, of course) at the farm’s first brick and mortar shop, located at 106 Waltham Street in the South End in the space that was once Barbara Lynch’s Plum Produce (between The Butcher Shop and cookbook store Stir).

Recently, I headed down to the shop to get a mini-tour from farm market manager Trevor Sieck. “We have been looking for a retail space for several years, and this one kind of opened up. Barbara [Lynch] asked us if we wanted to lease the old Plum space, and the price was right,” he says. “Within about a month we were here.”

In October, we told you that the Enormous Room would close after nine years as a Cambridge fixture to make way for a new nightlife concept. I just hung up with owner Gary Strack, who shared some exciting news on the replacement, which will be called Brick & Mortar.

Fans of the much-beloved B-Side Lounge should rejoice — the spot will be a joint concept between Strack, B-Side founder Patrick Sullivan, and other yet-unnamed industry stalwarts. “We just really, really love bars,” Strack says. “It’s almost a religious kind of passion.” READ MORE

While many have mourned the death of Ken’s Ramen in Allston last January, there’s a glimmer of ramen hope, it seems: a ramen pop-up, called ā€œGuchi’s Midnight Ramen,ā€ will be coming to Boston in the not-so-distant future. READ MORE
